MHS basics

What is the Model Hardware Standard (MHS)?

MHS proposes a shared way for AI agents to discover, understand, and operate physical equipment.

The Model Hardware Standard is a proposed interface for connecting AI systems to physical equipment. It describes devices, capabilities, current state, operations, and safety boundaries in a consistent format.

The goal is to reduce one-off integrations. A laboratory instrument, robot, or manufacturing device can be described once and then used by compatible agents and workflows through MCP, a command-line interface, or code APIs.

MHS does not make unsafe hardware safe by itself. Physical limits, permissions, emergency controls, and human oversight still need to be enforced outside the model prompt.
